Timber Shelter Extension & Wet Pour Play Surface Installation – Northwich

Project Overview

Our team was appointed to deliver a timber shelter extension and new wet pour play surface installation at a Junior School.

The objective was to expand an existing outdoor shelter and improve the ground surface beneath it to create a safe, durable and weather-resistant space for pupils to use throughout the year.

Works were scheduled during the school holiday period to avoid disruption to staff and pupils while ensuring safe working conditions.

Project Challenges

Several key factors required careful planning:

  • Maintaining design consistency with the existing timber shelter

  • Ensuring the structure complied with structural engineer calculations and roof loading requirements

  • Removing existing artificial grass surfacing and installing a compliant play surface

  • Delivering a long-lasting and safe wet pour rubber system suitable for school environments

Scope of Works

Timber Shelter Extension

The existing outdoor shelter was extended by approximately 10m x 4m, matching the layout and alignment of the existing structure.

Works included:

  • Setting out the structure inline with the existing shelter

  • Constructing the timber frame using matching materials and style

  • Installing roof supports designed in accordance with structural engineering calculations

  • Ensuring the roof pitch and guttering aligned with the existing system

  • Fixing structural elements securely to withstand environmental loads

The final structure blends seamlessly with the original shelter, providing additional covered outdoor space for students.

Play Area Preparation

Prior to installing the new surface, the team prepared the area to ensure long-term performance.

Preparation works included:

  • Removal and disposal of the existing artificial grass surface

  • Excavation and installation of the correct sub-base layers

  • Surface preparation to allow for effective bonding of the wet pour system

  • Application of primer to ensure proper adhesion

Wet Pour Rubber Safety Surface

A light green wet pour rubber play surface was installed across the 10m x 4m shelter footprint.

Installation specification included:

  • 40mm total depth wet pour system

  • 25mm rubber base layer

  • Durable top layer designed for playground use

Wet pour surfacing provides:

  • Excellent slip resistance

  • Shock absorption to reduce injury risk

  • A long lifespan with minimal maintenance

The finished surface is safe, visually appealing and highly durable, making it ideal for daily use in a school environment.

Health & Safety

Working in a school environment requires strict adherence to safety procedures.

Key measures included:

  • Scheduling works outside of term time

  • Secure site setup and controlled working areas

  • Proper handling and disposal of removed materials

  • Compliance with construction safety standards

Project Outcome

The completed project delivered:

  • A larger covered outdoor shelter for pupils

  • A safe and durable wet pour play surface

  • A structure that integrates perfectly with the existing school facilities

The improved space now provides a functional outdoor learning and play environment that can be used throughout the year.
