Project Overview
Civils & Environmental were appointed to complete investigative ducting works at a large contact centre. The company had companies do surveys previously with no outcome and required us to survey, identify and rectify issues with the ducting across the site, enabling the security works required to the site. This meant understanding the runs and potential cabling routes that had not been mapped.
The project involved multiple excavation locations across the site, including chamber installations, reinstatement works, hidden manhole identification, duct investigations to identify collapses, and vegetation clearance.
Working within a live commercial environment, the project required careful planning and coordination to minimise disruption while ensuring all investigations and remedial works were completed safely and efficiently.
Scope of Works
The completed works included:

Key Project Challenges
Unexpected Collapse Extent
During the EXCO 1 excavation works, the collapse was found to be significantly larger than originally anticipated. This required the excavation area to be enlarged to facilitate the replacement of a longer section of damaged ducting.
Our team adapted quickly to the changing site conditions, ensuring the additional excavation and reinstatement works were completed safely while maintaining programme efficiency.
Hidden Infrastructure
Multiple hidden and overgrown manholes were identified across the site. Extensive de-vegetation and hand excavation works were required to expose the chambers safely without damaging surrounding infrastructure.
At the Duct 3 investigation area between car parks, multiple exploratory excavations were undertaken to locate the correct manhole and establish the duct route.
Drainage Investigation Works
Following CCTV and camera surveys, further jetting operations were recommended to determine whether identified restrictions were caused by soft blockages or structural collapse.
Jetting operations proved successful, with no structural collapse identified within the ducting system.

Outcome
The completed works successfully resolved the identified access and ducting issues while improving visibility and accessibility across key areas of the site.
The investigative works allowed the client to gain a clearer understanding of the existing underground infrastructure and confirmed that several suspected collapses were in fact either historical infill works or removable soft blockages.
