Hardstanding cleaning

Hardstanding Cleaning Works – Lancaster Castle

Project Overview

Lancaster Castle is a historic landmark in Lancaster that receives a high number of visitors throughout the year. The external hardstanding areas required specialist cleaning to remove built-up dirt, algae, and general surface contamination while ensuring the historic surroundings were protected.

Our team was appointed to carry out professional high-pressure jetting works to restore the appearance and safety of the hardstanding surfaces within the castle grounds.

Due to the heritage setting and public access, the works required careful planning to ensure safety, minimise disruption, and work within the access constraints of the historic castle entrance.

The Challenge

Working within a heritage environment presented several operational challenges:

  • Restricted access through historic castle gates with height limitations

  • Continuous pedestrian movement from visitors and staff

  • Protecting surrounding historic structures during cleaning operations

  • Ensuring surface cleaning did not damage older paving materials

The cleaning also needed to remove long-term contamination without introducing excessive water runoff or disruption to public areas.

Our Solution

A specialist two-person team attended site with a professional jetting vehicle designed for controlled high-pressure surface cleaning.

The works were carefully managed to ensure safe operation within the castle grounds and protection of surrounding structures.

Key Steps Included

Site Setup and Safety Control

Before works commenced, the team implemented safe working procedures to manage pedestrian movement and vehicle access within the castle grounds.

This ensured that cleaning operations could be completed safely without affecting visitors or nearby activities.

High-Pressure Surface Jetting

Specialist jetting equipment was used to clean the hardstanding areas effectively. The high-pressure water system removed:

  • Built-up dirt

  • Algae and organic growth

  • General contamination from foot traffic and weathering

The cleaning process restored the original surface appearance while maintaining the integrity of the paving.

Controlled Cleaning Methods

Because the works took place in a sensitive historic environment, cleaning pressures and techniques were carefully controlled to prevent damage to older materials.

This ensured the cleaning process was both effective and conservation-conscious.

Results

The jetting works significantly improved the appearance and safety of the external hardstanding areas.

Key outcomes included:

  • Removal of algae and surface contamination

  • Improved slip resistance on pedestrian routes

  • Restored visual appearance of historic paving

  • Safe completion within a high-traffic heritage environment

The completed works helped maintain the presentation and safety standards expected at one of the region’s most important historic visitor locations.
